As a result of new LTA rules, the operation of our Wimbledon Draw has changed this year.

The Club receives an allocation of pairs of tickets for the championships based on the numbers of Club members who are also members of British Tennis. This year, we have received 18 pairs of tickets in our allocation: the price per pair of tickets for each day and court is shown below:

All adult members and junior members aged 9 or over who are also members of British Tennis are eligible to enter the Draw for a pair of tickets, provided that they have also paid their membership subscription by the time of the Draw.

To enter, add your name to the Wimbledon list now in the Clubhouse. Junior members must gain the permission of their parent/guardian to enter (and the parent/guardian must attend the Draw below).

The 2009 Draw will take place at 4:00pm on Sunday 17 May 2009 in the Clubhouse. Members must be present in person (or send a proxy) to the draw; if their name is drawn (with a maximum of one pair of tickets per household), the member must select a pair of tickets from those remaining and pay for them by cash or cheque.

Both tickets of each pair must be used only by Club members (ie members can take adult and junior members but cannot take third parties on their tickets); junior members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult member. The member must provide the names of both users of the tickets which have to be submitted by the Club back to the LTA to meet LTA security requirements.

Sunday matches updated again

French Open

The French Open is being covered on the BBC Interactive channel (the red button on Freeview, Freesat & satellite/cable) between Sunday 24 May and Friday 5 June from 10:00am to 7:00pm every day.

The women’s final is scheduled to be shown on BBC2 at 2:00pm on Saturday 6 June and the men’s final at 2:00pm on Sunday 7 June.

Enter the Club Tournament 2009

The draw is now open for the Club Tournament 2009 - please enter by putting your name on the form in the Clubhouse.

The categories are:

men's, men's senior, ladies' and ladies' senior singles
men's, men's senior, ladies', ladies' senior, mixed and mixed senior doubles
junior's singles.

If you don't have a partner for doubles, put your name down anyway, and Joe and Jeremy will team you up.

Please sign up by Sunday 28 June as the first rounds will kick off quite soon thereafter. The finals will be held over the week-end of 19 and 20 September, with the prize-giving and social at The Pavilion on the evening of Saturday 26 September.

American Tournament & 40th Celebration

The latest American Tournament held on Sunday 2nd August was won by Andy Asher and Sylvia Hines who can both be seen in the gallery photographs proudly clutching their prizes. See the gallery page >>

As well as a very successful tournament, there was a celebration to mark our longest serving member - Alan Cooper - attaining 40 years of membership. Although the celebration was meant to be a surprise to him, the Treasurer had let the cat out of the bag, allowing Alan time to both prepare and research a speech. Alan described some of the key events in 1969, including the Wilson government and the moon landings: he observed that the astronauts could well have rehearsed their endeavours on our courts which at the time had a similar surface to that of the moon. He also noted that his initial annual membership of 5 guineas would be around £96 in today's money, and asked Mike to justify why the subscription is now quite a lot more: the answers rained down on him in no uncertain manner.

Alan is in fact the only member of the club to play tennis with the founder of the club - Guy Chester - who at the time in 1969 was 86, and who died some 5 days later, though whether the shock of playing with Alan was a contributory factor is not known.

Quiz teams needed

Court repairs and Club improvements

Please take care on the 3^rd court, as there is quite a lot of moss around the edges of the court that Joe will be spraying with moss killer, once we have a couple of dry days. Also, on the subject of court safety, we have contractors geared up to repair the tears on courts 1 and 3 but again they can work on the repairs only when we have dry weather.

The good news is that in March 2010 work will commence on the refurbishment of the 4^th court, involving a new multi-use hard court surface as well as new netting and an upgrade of the lighting. We believe that the work will take about six weeks. It has taken us four years of meetings with the Estate to arrive at this outcome! We also have planning permission to build a storage area behind the Clubhouse, and we hope that work will start on this in January or February, subject to the vagaries of Haringey's Building Control inspectors.

At the AGM last night we were able to tell those who attended that we had two pieces of good news for the club.

Firstly, we have finally been given permission to have the fourth court re-furbished and that should be happening within the next month.

The other news is that within the next few months work should start on the storage shed behind the clubhouse and when completed this will allow us to clear the clubhouse of chairs etc to leave space for some comfortable seating etc.

Membership renewals

With the new membership year starting on 1 April 2010, renewal requests were emailed (or postal mailed in a small number of cases) to all existing adult and junior members yesterday. Members are asked to renew their membership as promptly as possible (or to advise the Treasurer, Secretary or Membership Secretary if they do not plan to renew) so that we can offer places to new members on the waiting list. There is a financial incentive to renew promptly (by 15 April), and a financial penalty for renewing late.

Wimbledon draw date

Through circumstances beyond our control, we have had to re-schedule the date for our Wimbledon Draw, which will now take place on Sunday 9 May at 1:00pm in the Clubhouse.

The Draw this year will be in a different form, in that you do not need to sign your name on a list, you just need to turn up on the day with the following:

your British Tennis Membership number
knowing your preferred dates if your name should come out in the Draw (we will advise you when we have the dates for our ticket allocation)
a cheque or cash to pay for your tickets.

Please note that you must have paid your subscription for 2010/11 before entering the Draw and if you are unable to be at the Draw in person you can send a proxy but unfortunately committee members are not able to act as a proxy. Only one pair of tickets will be allocated per winning household.

If you are successful in winning a pair of tickets in the draw, the Club member with British Tennis Membership is now allowed to take any guest, who does not need to be a Club or British Tennis member.

American Tournament update

A reminder that if you have signed up for the American Tournament on Sunday 25 April you will need to be at the club at 1:45pm at the latest so that we can start the tournament promptly at 2:00pm. Parking will be difficult so if you can walk, cycle or share a lift that would be helpful.

The work on the fourth court is ahead of schedule and if the weather holds the contractors will be laying the tarmac next Monday. We then have three to four weeks to wait while the tarmac cures and then the lines can be painted and that will need 4 days to dry – so progress at last!

If you have paid your subscription for this year, please put your new Parking Permit for 2010/11 on your windscreen ASAP.

New group session

Joe has a noon class on Saturdays for people who are new to tennis or have not played for some time. Once they improve they move to his 1:00pm session and once Joe considers they are ready, they have the option of playing in the general club sessions.

To aid this process, there will be a session on Saturdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for those who are not yet ready for club sessions but would like to practice with others of a similar standard. The first one will be on 1 May 2010.

A new and enthusiastic member Grace has asked for this and we invite any club members who do not yet feel able to join in a club session but would like the opportunity to practice with others.

If you would like to attend then either email myself or speak to Joe. There are already a few people who are interested.

Wimbledon Draw 2010

A reminder that our Wimbledon Draw will be this Sunday 9 May at 1:00pm. To be eligible for the Draw you need to have paid your subscription by Saturday 8 May (we cannot accept payment on the day of the Draw) and to be a Member of British Tennis

Fourth court update

The 4th court now has temporary lines and a net. It will still require a top coat of paint in a couple of weeks time to bring it to its full glory, but at least we now have four courts which will be very useful to you all and especially Joe during the summer match season. The 4th court floodlights also now work but are not to the standard of the others: Joe has the key. We are looking to upgrade the lights in due course.

When the court gets its full paint job, it will be dark green within the actual playing surface and light green around that. That should look wonderful and will highlight the actual playing area, so no reason whatsoever then to hit the ball out, though you will still need to get it over the net - we are working on that one for you.

We will have to arrange for the court to be marked our for 5 a side football as well but have cunningly arranged that those lines will not impinge onto the tennis court at all.

We are in discussion with the Estate and the church to agree times when we have priority on this court and those will then be bookable in the same way as the other three courts. However until we have that agreement, the use will be on a first come first served basis with Joe having first option.

This is just the first of many improvements we are making this year. As you know, we are the 'best little tennis club in North London' but why stop there!

Returner's session on Sunday

Please note that the new session that we started for those club members who feel they are not quite ready for the normal club session has moved from Saturday to a Sunday.

So from this Sunday, there are two courts available from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. This should suit those who go to Joe's noon Saturday group as they now have a day's rest between the two.

Grace, who started this group, wishes to extend an invitation to those who already go to club sessions as well if they would like to attend.

Fourth court usage

The estate has now agreed priority for the 4th court which we will share with them (Chester House and the church).

The new booking sheets will show when you can reserve and guarantee the court and when you can use it if free but not reserve it. For the latter occasions, you would have to vacate the court if someone from Chester House or the church wished to play though outside Wimbledon-inspired enthusiasm they do not use them often.

Our priority / bookable times are:

Monday to Friday: 5:00pm until 9:30pm

Saturday: noon until 8:00pm (the club session will use the court during the usual times)

Sunday: 10:00am until 8:00pm (the last 2 hours is on a trial basis as I added it in after the initial request; again usual club session applies).

The agreement is that if someone from the estate is using the 4th court during our priority, then they would be politely asked to leave but allowed up to 5 minutes to finish a game and the same would apply in reverse. No one else can use the courts: a few outsiders chance their arm from time to time, so only club members and people from Chester House, the church or occasionally workers from the sheltered housing can play. So far none of the residents have played but you never know.

We are aiming to upgrade the lights on the 4th court as well and move their control into our club house but in the mean time Joe has the key for the lights, needed from about 8:30pm at the moment.

We have shared the cost of the upgrade with the estate and they have been generous with us as our priority times are those when we would most likely use them.

Extension to the Clubhouse

Work has started today on the foundations for the storage extension to the Clubhouse, and also on a soakaway next to the gate to Court 2 to try and stop water flooding on to the court.

The builders need to use part of our parking space to store earth for removal, so there will probably be only three or four parking spaces available over the next few days. They will hopefully be able to clear the parking area for the weekend.

Access via the gate to Court 2 may also be restricted until the end of Friday.

Quiz Night

We need a few more groups of 6 to take part in the Quiz evening - could you email Lorraine if you can make up a table or if you would like to be placed on an existing table, we do have a few spaces available. If you have already indicated that you have a group ready to take part could you confirm this please?

Returners' Club Session

If you are interested in taking part in this session, it takes place on court 4 from 12-2 on a Sunday. The session is meant for club members who would like to play doubles with other club members in preparation for joining the other club sessions during the week, once Joe feels that you are ready.

Membership

The club's adult membership has reached its maximum, and there is now a waiting list. Membership remains open for juniors.

Coaching with Joe

Joe has now returned from his home visit and he has resumed his individual and group coaching.

November update

about the Quiz night and 4th court floodlights.

We had a successful quiz last night, with seven teams of six and a most enjoyable evening. Julian's team, mainly from the men's 2nd team, not content with just being much better at tennis than the rest of us, even won the quiz, which somehow doesn't seem fair but well done to them. I mean, who knew that John Lennon dedicated a song to his dog !!! Well apparently some people did. As long as there is interest we will have another next November, so start swotting up.

Now we are supposed to be in recession. We have been waiting 3 months for the company we use to start the upgrade to the 4th court floodlights, and finally they have promised to start during the week commencing the 22nd November: we will see. The upgrade will not have any effect on daytime use, but there could be a few days between the removal of the old lights and the installation of the new ones. I suggest reserving the court as usual for the evenings and if unfortunately that is one of the evenings between floodlights, we will contact you as soon as we know.

November update 2

about mid-week club sessions and problems on the courts caused by moss.

A reminder that as well as the two weekend afternoon club sessions, there are two mid-week ones: Thursday morning from 10:30 until 12:30 and Wednesday evening from 7:30.

The Wednesday evening session has a nucleus of regular players but would welcome more, so do pop along. To encourage you, the floodlights are included.

A note of caution for players at the moment. The areas at the far end of the 3rd court by the tree and also at the pavilion end of the section between courts 1 and 2 have a slight moss problem. Joe is waiting for a few dry days before applying the moss killer and hopefully this could be possible in the next few days. However do be careful until he is able to do this work. The moss then dies back and will become brown: this is a little unsightly but safer and can then be removed from the surface. Our courts drain very well but in winter the surface will always be a little wetter than in summer, so the main thing you can do as a player is to ensure that your tennis shoes have good unworn soles: maybe get a loved one to buy you new ones for Christmas.

Coverage of the Australian Open

There is coverage of the Australian Open from 17-30 January on BBC Interactive (via Freeview, Freesat and the BBC web site).

BBC Red Button: Live coverage each morning from 08:00 GMT. There will also be additional live coverage of selected matches from 00:00 GMT, which will be decided once the schedule of each day's play has been released. A highlights loop of the best of the day's play will be available from approximately 14:00 GMT every day.

BBC One/Two: BBC One will show a highlights programme on the first Saturday of the tournament from 13:00-14:30 GMT.

There will also be highlights of the women's final on BBC One from 13:00-14:00 on Saturday, 29 January, and live coverage of the men's final on BBC Two from 08:15-12:00 on Sunday, 30 January.

For satellite and cable subscribers, Eurosport are also showing the Australian Open from 00:00 to around 13:30 every day on Eurosport 1, with additional matches on Eurosport 2.

AGM

Our AGM this year will be at 7:30pm on Friday 4^th March with a buffet supper after the meeting. We would like to extend a special invitation to all members who were new to the club this year as this is a good opportunity to meet other club members. We keep the formal part of the meeting to a time limit and therefore there is time to socialise afterwards.

If you are able to attend the meeting could you please sign your name on the form on the notice board as we need an idea of numbers for the catering.

Membership renewals and applications

The Club's membership year for 2011/12 starts on 1 April 2011. Emails have been sent out today asking existing members to renew their membership for 2011/12, and letters will also be sent to the small number of members who don't have an active email account.

Potential new members already on the waiting list will be sent letters in the next two weeks inviting them to join. Provided that we still have capacity, the application form for further new members will be available on the web site from the end of March.

April update

regarding the returners' group session and Sunday match dates.

The returners' group session, for members who are not yet quite ready to join the main club sessions, will move from its winter spot of noon till 2pm on Sundays to Sunday evenings from 6pm to 8pm, starting Sunday 10th April. There is one remaining daytime session this Sunday 3rd April at noon.

Grace Chen co-ordinates the session and the group will offer a warm welcome to both existing and new participants. So just turn up, or if uncertain you can check with Mike or Joe. A good opportunity to practice the shots Joe has taught you.

There will be home matches for our Aegon Team Tennis team on the following Sundays: April 10, May 1, May 22, May 29 and June 19. These matches will use three courts and will start at 11am and finish before the start of club session at 2:30pm.

Dear All

We trust you are all enthused by Wimbledon, the MHM of south London. They are bigger we are better. Now we can not compete with their roof but have our own plans, so to update you.

1. Renovation of club house.

We are awaiting quotes for an upgrade to the inside of the club house and renovation to the outside. We hope to have this completed by the Autumn. Our aim is to make te inside more comfortable and better use the space now that we have the outside store room.

2. Resurfacing of courts 1 - 3.

We will start discussions with estate soon and hope that we will be able to have courts 1 - 3 resurfaced in the Autumn of 2012. Our thought are to have a similar surface to the one we already have, even at about 12 years old they are still popular with you all and visiting clubs comment on how much they like them. We will also renew the outer netting at the same time.

3. We are still waiting for the painting of the 4th court to be finalized after the rework that was necessary and I will remind the company again.

4. Membership

We still have a few vacancies so if you know of anyone thinking of joining, get them to act quickly.

Now things for you to do for us

1. Parking

A little side bonus of being a club member is having a convenient car park for shopping in Muswell Hill. We are happy for this to occur but please do so only for short times and outside busy tennis periods / club sessions. Also, if you park perpendicular to the fence we can get seven cars in, each car parked at an angle reduces that number by one. Please note that we are allowed to park in the sheltered housing car park as long as we can leave 3 free places.

2. Visitors Fees

It is nice to have a court to bring along a visitor and again we are happy for that to happen. However there is a £5 adult £3 junior visitors fee. We do not police it but rely on your honesty. You can give the money to Joe or any committee member at the time or a later date but even if no one sees you, it still happened.

I have received fewer visitor fees at this point than in previous years !!!

3. Annual Tournament

Membership update

Unfortunately we will have to close membership to juniors from the 1st August. We have reached the maximum that 4 courts can accommodate.

We will operate a wait list and also any non members can still attend Joe's classes and have individual lessons.

We have a few vacancies for adults. so if you have any friends thinking of joining tell them to be quick.

Also, a reminder that like going to a pantomime, you must have a junior with you to play tennis on our courts up until noon on Sundays. Previously we were not allowed to play until noon but the church now allows that time to be used by juniors and families and for the occasional match.

About taking care on the court surfaces in winter, and about the Quiz night.

Surface of Courts

This note is to remind all club members to take great care on the courts in the winter months as there are areas at the end of the courts that are slippery after wet weather.

For your own safely you should also ensure that you are wearing shoes with sufficient grip for our type of court.

We will arrange to have the slippery areas cleaned in the short term and in the long term we are working towards the replacement of the surface of the courts.

If someone is injured in a fall on the courts, whoever witnesses the fall must record the incident in the Accident Book which can be found in the First Aid drawer.

Quiz Night - Saturday 12 November

We suggest arriving at 7:30pm at the Pavilion for a prompt 8:00pm start for the Quiz.

You £6 entrance fee includes your first drink (thereafter a cash bar) and a light buffet supper.

About plans for 2012.

Happy New Year to you all. The start of another year seems an appropriate time to update you on our plans for 2012.

Firstly, we still have the problem of water coming onto the courts near the middle gate even though we had drainage and a soak away installed a couple of years ago. That area takes longer to soak away and also as that gate is the most used, mud is carried in from the grass area.

In the short term, we will get the mud power washed away this week but after today's storm there is likely to be more water than ever, so take extra care.

The solution is two fold. The path by the club house is a little uneven so that will be attended to soon and we will ask that the path that leads to the centre gate be angled slightly away from the courts and add a new channel to take away the water that flows down from the path and terrace area.

Secondly and the best news is that we are looking to replace the surface of all three courts this year, we are aiming for August as a month after summer team matches and before the annual tournament. We will speak to whichever contractor we use to see if there is extra drainage that can be installed in the problem area as well.

Our thoughts are to have a similar surface to that we currently have and will see what options now exists 12 years after the installation of our existing one.

We have not forgotten that we are going to remove the walls of the telephone / old store room within the club house to create a larger and more attractive usable area. That has been delayed as our preferred contractor has not been able to fit us into his schedule yet.

So all in all, 2012 should be a wonderful year for the club, new surface and improved club house, you just have to do your bit and play tennis worthy of the new courts.

All adult members and junior members aged 9 or over who are also members of British Tennis linked to the Club are eligible to enter the Draw for a pair of Wimbledon tickets, provided that they have also paid their membership subscription by Friday 20 April. Junior members must gain the permission of their parent/guardian to enter (who must also attend the Draw below).

To enter, you must attend the draw in person (or send a proxy who cannot be a committee member) at 1:00pm on Sunday 22 April 2012 in the Clubhouse. Attendees will be issued numbered raffle tickets: if a member’s raffle number is drawn, the member or proxy must select a pair of Wimbledon tickets from those remaining and commit to buying them. The LTA will then email the winning members requesting them to pay for their tickets online or by phone, and the LTA will then despatch the tickets to the winning members. Winning members will be required to provide the names of both users of the tickets, and sign a disclaimer to meet LTA security requirements. Whilst the first ticket must be used by the nominated Club member, they may take a guest who is not a member.

Only one pair of Wimbledon tickets may be allocated per household. At the time of visiting the championships, junior members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
